Liberty Media, the owner of Formula 1, acquires MotoGP in a strategic move.
In a move that could reshape the landscape of world motorcycling, Liberty Media, known for owning Formula 1, has announced the acquisition of the rights to MotoGP, the world's most prestigious motorcycle racing competition. The deal, expected to be finalized by the end of 2024, puts Liberty Media in control of 86% of Dorna Sports, the Spanish company that has managed MotoGP since 1992.
Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has expressed his enthusiasm for the deal, stating that it represents "the perfect next step in the evolution of MotoGP." Ezpeleta, who will continue to lead the organization, has highlighted the value and growth potential of the sport, as well as Liberty Media's ability to develop sports assets and expand the fan base globally.
The transaction, valued at approximately 4.2 billion euros, not only includes MotoGP but also control over the WorldSBK and the MotoE World Cup, significantly expanding Liberty Media's influence in the world of motorcycling. Additionally, the acquisition reflects an equity value of 3.5 billion euros, and the existing debt balance in MotoGP will be maintained after the deal closes.
This strategic move by Liberty Media not only consolidates its position in the motorsports market but also promises to take MotoGP to new heights, with the commitment to greater exposure and development. With Liberty Media's experience and resources, the future of MotoGP appears brighter than ever, with expectations of growth and an expansion of its already passionate fan base.
The agreement is subject to approval from competition authorities and foreign investment laws in various jurisdictions, but once completed, it will mark the beginning of a new era for MotoGP and its fans.
