In a move that could reshape the landscape of global motorcycle racing, Liberty Media—best known as the owner of Formula 1—has announced the acquisition of MotoGP rights, the most prestigious motorcycle racing championship in the world. The deal, expected to be completed by the end of 2024, will see Liberty Media take ownership of 86% of Dorna Sports, the Spanish company that has managed MotoGP since 1992.

Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta has expressed his enthusiasm for the agreement, stating that it represents “the perfect next step in the evolution of MotoGP.” Ezpeleta, who will remain at the helm of the organization, highlighted the sport’s value and growth potential, as well as Liberty Media’s ability to develop sports assets and expand the global fan base.

The transaction, valued at approximately €4.2 billion, not only includes MotoGP but also control over WorldSBK and the MotoE World Cup, significantly expanding Liberty Media’s influence in the world of motorcycle racing. In addition, the acquisition reflects an equity value of €3.5 billion, and MotoGP’s existing debt balance will be maintained following the closing of the deal.

This strategic move by Liberty Media not only consolidates its position in the motorsports market, but also promises to take MotoGP to new heights, with the prospect of greater exposure and development. With Liberty Media’s experience and resources, the future of MotoGP looks brighter than ever, with expectations of growth and an expansion of its already passionate fan base.

The agreement is subject to approval by competition authorities and foreign investment laws in several jurisdictions, but once completed, it will mark the beginning of a new era for MotoGP and its fans.
